Why Hire A Doula?

Continuous Support in Childbirth is a World Health Organisation and NHS recognised recommendation that is rarely received by birthing people in the UK. Of the three types of providers of continuous support, someone in a doula role appears to offer the greatest set of benefits.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that the bespoke and personal support a Doula offers the birthing person and their family:

– reduces the likelihood of an unplanned caesarean birth (≤ 39% ‡)
– reduces the likelihood of an instrumental birth (≤ 15% ‡)
– reduces the need for painkillers or epidurals during birth (≤ 500% ‡)
– reduces the likelihood of induction of labour (≤ 15% ‡)
– results in a shorter overall labour
– reduces the incidence of postnatal depressive symptoms
– increases the likelihood of initiating and successfully establishing breastfeeding / chestfeeding (≤ 300% ‡)
– improves equity and facilitates more culturally responsive care

And, vitally,
– increases parental satisfaction with the birth experience.

The truth is that a one-size-fits-all system does the job across a population but rarely fits any one particular family well. A Doula might not be able to change the system – but we can at least help alter it to better fit you and your family, with strikingly positive outcomes.

"The truth is that a one-size-fits-all system does the job across a population but rarely fits any one particular family well."
